The security of the postal system is being challenged in new ways, making checks sent via physical mail more vulnerable than ever. Fraudsters are increasingly targeting physical mail, whether it’s left in residential mailboxes, dropped into blue collection boxes, or handed directly to post office employees. Our firm alone has seen multiple instances of this throughout the summer.
The primary risk with mailed checks is a scam known as “check washing.” This is a sophisticated process where common household chemicals are used to erase the ink on a check. They then rewrite the check for a new recipient and a much larger amount. This type of fraud is widespread and has led to significant financial losses for many.
Protecting Yourself
Given the increasing vulnerabilities of the postal system, it’s essential to rethink how you handle your finances, specifically payments. We strongly recommend that you:
- Use High-Security Pens: If you must write a check, use a black indelible gel ink pen. The ink is designed to be difficult to wash or alter, providing an extra layer of protection.
- Go Digital: Whenever possible, use secure electronic payment methods such as online bill pay, direct deposit, and electronic funds transfers. These options eliminate the risk of physical mail theft entirely.
- Monitor Your Accounts: Keep a close eye on your bank and credit card statements. Regularly review your transactions for any suspicious activity and report it to your bank immediately.
- Track Your Mail: Sign up for the free USPS Informed Delivery service. This provides daily email alerts with images of your incoming mail, helping you to spot if a check or other important document goes missing.
By transitioning to digital payments and adopting these simple safety measures, you can proactively protect yourself from the rising tide of mail fraud and secure your financial peace of mind.
